Dumfries House Opens

After undertaking a major restoration, Dumfries House was opened to the public by HRH Prince of Wales on 6th May 2010.

The restoration featured Humphries Weaving fabrics in all the principle State Rooms. The design that was used in the White Drawing room, the Family Palour, and the State Bedroom, was redrawn from fragments discovered on the Chippendale furniture that had been originally commissioned for the house when first built. The Pink Dining room was the only room with surviving textile evidence and great care was taken to rematch the damask colour and tone to the historic trimmings which were retained and conserved from the original decoration.

Strawberry Hill, Twickenham, Greater London

September 2010 marked the opening of the newly renovated Strawberry Hill house in London. This exceptional example of Gothic revival which was owned and built by Horace Walpole, has been atruly amazing project to work with and grabbing the Worlds attention now that is has been unveiled.

Humphries Weaving have woven three historic reproductions for the house. The Round Room design was redrawn from The Vyne (National Trust) in Hampshire. The fabric represents a damask version of an earlier brocatelle wallcovering. The Great North Bedchamber features a ribbon and bow design which was popular at that time, and was chosen from the Humphries Archive. The crimson colour was carefully matched to documentary evidence found both at the house and other textile documents of the period. The final room was the Beauclerk closet; restored to a pale blue dress fabric document of the period from the Victoria and Albert Museum. Evidence revielled that the fabric of the dress was originally intended for furnishings and exported in the United States of America at the time of the house decoration.

Historic Taboret striped fabric woven in pure silk and linen was recreated at Humphries Weaving Company for the window drape restoration at Attingham park. House documentation revealed that the original striped moire was extremely rich and woven in a shocking crushed strawberry pink. Meticulour accuracy was applied by the restoration team at Humphries, to ensure an accurate reproduction of the satin stripe cloth. The moire finish was hand applied on the companies own machine which ensured a true organic watered finish.
