The Orders of Chivalry Robes

The Orders of Chivalry Robes, Great Britain.

Humphries Weaving has a long standing tradition of supplying the highest quality fabric for use in Royal Chivalry robes and ceremonial dress.

The orders of chivalry hold great honour and are steeped in tradition, they are bestowed by the monarch to reward loyal supporters, outstanding service to the country or to recognise acts of distinction. These orders are also commonly known as the ‘Queens Birthday Honours’.

The six orders of chivalry are:

  • The Most Noble Order of the Garter
  • The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle
  • The Most Honourable Order of The Bath
  • The Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George
  • The Royal Victorian Order
  • The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire

The Most Noble Order of the Garter Robe

Ceremonial dress mantle for H.R.H Prince of Wales Garter Robe.

The mantle is made from pure silk, hand cut velvet in a deep blue. As the velvet is made by hand, every line must be delicately woven and carefully cut. A whole day of hand weaving can result in as little as 16 inches of fabric being produced and is therefore only commissioned for most prestigious projects.

Hand cut velvet is usually desired over machine cut because no pile is created, resulting in increased luminosity and the highly luxurious finish. Kings and Queens throughout history have had their portraits painted or photographed in their order of the garter robes.
