The Metropolitan Museum of Art, located in New York, is the largest art museum in the United States, and one of the ten largest in the world. It house internationally significant items of art and decorative arts, with a permanent collection in excess of two million pieces.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, or ‘The Met’ as it is also commonly known, was founded in 1870 by a group of American citizens. The founders included businessmen and financiers, as well as leading artists and thinkers of the day, who wanted to open a museum to bring art and art education to the American people. It continues to be home to some of the most influential exhibitions of our day.

The Wrightsman Galleries Tester Bed

The Wrightsman Galleries for French and Decorative Arts. The galleries underwent extensive renovations in 2007 and houses a renowned collection of French furniture and decorative arts.

Humphries Weaving were commission to weave a pure silk damask in a pale blue and cream for the bed drapes of the gilt bed in the Wrightsman Galleries. The warp is constructed in an attractive two colour strié and forms an impressive decorative scheme.

Gothic Revival Rooms

Housed in the American Wing the Gothic Revivial Rooms showcase furniture and decorative arts from the popular movement of the late 18th and early 19th Century .

Silk and wool damask boarder and tissues in rust, Royal blue and gold, used for curtains and upholstery in the Gothic Revival Room.
