Project Description
Sherborne House is a stunning Grade I Listed Georgian mansion in Dorset. Humphries Weaving collaborated with Stonewood Builders & Spase Architects to assist in restoring the mansion to its full glory. The house is an independent charitable trust that hosts hospitality events, art programmes and more to allow access to the community, ensuring the continued preservation of the historic house and the Sir James Thornhill Mural. The project by Spase has been shortlisted for multiple national awards, including the Georgian Group Awards 2024.
Humphries Weaving worked closely with the teams during this project, as there was no original fabric to recreate, we combined our expertise with the client's requests. The scope of the project allowed us to create completely bespoke fabrics for The Sherborne with custom colours and finishes.
Using our archive documents of period colours and designs, we consulted on period-appropriate fabric for the Georgian wing of the house, weaving wall upholstery fabric for the Hallway and Georgian Room.
In the Georgian room, we wove a gorgeous bespoke-dyed champagne moiré. We are the only uncontrolled moiré producers in the UK; with our specialist machinery, we produced a completely unique watermark-like design for The Sherborne, using the same technique as the fabric we wove for Hampton Court Palace.
For the Hallway, using our archive of designs, the Caroline Damask was selected. This design dates to the early 18th century. The original design was redrawn by Humphries Weaving from King George II's bed for Hampton Court Palace. For The Sherborne, we specifically redrew the design to optimise the width of the repeat. The striking crimson colour was chosen from our archive for period appropriateness and bespoke-dyed for the project.
This project was truly a showcase of restoration and recreation. Humphries Weaving was chosen to preserve the past with a vision for the future alongside other skilled contractors. Keeping the skills traditional and local, and using sustainable practices was key to this project. As we are a leading British textiles mill that has achieved the highest possible OEKO-TEX® accreditation we were best place to complete this project.
If you have a project that no longer has evidence of original fabric and want to bring a period building back to life, we will guide you to make that happen.
