Sudbury Silk Stories

Friday 6th September 2019 saw the much anticipated launch of the Sudbury Silk Stories film. The project began in January 2019 and is allowing people a glimpse inside the world of Sudbury silk. The project team talked to current and former staff, young and old to record their stories, including staff from Humphries Weaving. Exploring the history and changes that have taken place in the industry to ensuring it continues to hold its position creating some of the finest silk produced in Europe, sought after by royal palaces, top fashion houses and luxury hotels.

The project was supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Babergh District Council, project managed by Carole Creasey and filmed and produced by the local charity The Offshoot Foundation. The filmed interviews were conducted by local students from Thomas Gainsborough School and Ormiston Academy  Sudbury Silk Stories has worked with local people and organisations, including Humphries Weaving to gather stories and anecdotes, clips of which have been used to create a short film and the full interviews, filmed, recorded and written available on this website.

Contributions can be viewed from the following Humphries Weaving Staff;

Humphries Weaving welcomed 3 students from Thomas Gainsborough School who had attended workshops with the Offshoot Foundation to learn about the process of film making and were then let loose with the scripted (and more interesting, non scripted!) questions for Richard, Brain and Natalie. It was great to share an insight into our business and our own personal experiences of Sudbury Silk as well as show off some of the beautiful silk samples that we have woven.
