Our multi-disciplined team are all accomplished in custom fabric design with the ability to understand and hand draw complex designs, using both traditional and modern mediums. This craft is crucial in the Humphries Weaving studio and is often used to accurately replicate historic fabric design. It is important to establish how something was originally constructed before deciding how we can accurately replicate it. Our attention to detail and the time we dedicate to this stage is the signature of the work that we produce.
We also work in collaboration with clients to develop contemporary fabrics, either from antique textiles that they have collected or we interpret their own original artwork and ideas into a workable textile.
We can translate from sketches, historic fabric design, inspiration boards and digital images as well as allowing clients to draw inspiration from our own extensive archive. We then convert these initial ideas into our state of the art Computer Aided Design System (CAD) for further development. This method is more timely and efficient than traditional Jacquard card cutting technology, allowing immediate changes in design, scale and construction to meet with the clients wishes.
Our team are experienced in working with the most discerning of customers, from other trained designers and practitioners, to those with no background or formal training who simply want to bring their idea to life.
One example of where these services were utilised can be seen in Catletown House in Ireland. Over 150 hours of design work was involved with recreating their complex historic textile, which also includes 14 different weave constructions. To find out more about the project click here. More custom fabric design work we have been involved with is listed on Our Work page.
